This is on Ontario’s highway 417 in Ottawa. This breaks at least two sections of the Ontario’s traffic law — that bicycles aren’t permitted on highways like this (for obvious reasons) and that you don’t ride against traffic (for equally obvious reasons).

It’s bad enough that adult human beings made a decision this bad, but it’s extra terrible that they took a child along.

I’m guessing they made it off the highway without causing an accident, because no news reports have come out about it. I’m glad no driver is facing up to the reality that he took out four idiots today.

Hold up hold up. You’re telling me that bicyclists ignored traffic laws and common sense?

I’m a cyclist, and this incenses me as much or more as it does you. There is a manifest difference between your garden variety rolling stop on a street and riding against four lanes of traffic at 120 km/h. They could have killed themselves and others.

I’m going to guess more, since -apart from the poor child that doesn’t know better- I would feel very little pity if an 18 wheeler teaches them all a lesson. Buuut. I hate people, so...

“...you don’t ride against traffic (for equally obvious reasons)“

Forty three years ago I used to ride in the same direction as traffic. Then one night I borrowed my friend’s bike and took off going North on US41 out of Tampa, which was a two-lane road. A passing truck got me with its extra-wide trailer-pulling mirrors. I went into the ditch and the bike went under the truck and got mashed up into a roughly spherical shape. First thing I remember after coming to was the truck driver grabbing me by the shoulders and saying in a voice filled with distress, “Are you dead?” Since then, to Hell with the law, I refuse to ride a bicycle where I can’t see the motor traffic coming at me.

I haven’t cycled in a long time, and I’m not familiar with whether or not there is a requirement to face the same way as the rest of traffic. However, I do remember my parents telling me as a boy to face traffic so that I can always see what’s coming, and be prepared to act appropriately.

Bicycles are vehicles and should behave like them.

...except for travelling on freeways, right?

I know that there are some states where bicycles are allowed on freeways, but just like Ontario, Michigan is not one of them. A quick Google search tells me that Michigan also requires bicycles to travel on the right side of the road. Good to know.
